Cervicogenic Headaches
Is our headache a pain in the neck?

Headaches where the pain originates in the cervical spine (upper spine), neck and upper shoulders are often referred to as a "cervicogenic" headache. Many times, these headaches can be a byproduct of injuries such as whiplash, joint or muscle trauma and more commonly due to poor prolonged posture or even cases of severe stress.
These headaches arising from the neck generally respond quite quickly to treatment and a complete resolution of symptoms can be expected if there are no underlying causes still present. In some cases where the headaches are quite long-term (chronic), your physiotherapist may have to address your posture (study, work & sleep), spinal stiffness, muscle weakness, tightness and imbalances, along with advice on exercises, pillows for sleep and other lifestyle factors. Immediate treatment is the best management for all headaches causes by the neck that do not resolve within a few days of rest and analgesia.

Poor Posture = Extra Strain On The Neck
Ever wondered why physio's constantly talk about posture? This picture shows the extra force placed on your spine by poor posture. Do yourself a favour and make sure you site and stand with a "tall" posture
Shoulders gently drawn down and back, head above shoulders and chin gently tucked in. If you are feeling tight in the neck, a great exercise is pulling the chin back (retraction). Be sure to stand upright, then keeping your face flat, pull your chin back - like you are "walking like an Egyptian". you should feel a pull up the back of your neck but not a sharp pain (If you feel pain, stop until you have seen your physio), hold for a couple of seconds, and repeat a few times.
